Curriculum Intent Statements
RJS Intent Statement
The overarching intent of our PRIDE curriculum is that children should, over time, know more and be able to do more because of the learning, knowledge and experiences to which we give them access. Broadening their horizons, extending their knowledge, understanding, abilities and appreciation of the world and their place in it (our definition of cultural capital) means they are fully prepared for the next stage of their learning journey and are well-placed to be positive, purposeful, successful members of our diverse and changing society.
Art and Design: Children experiment, invent and create their own and collaborative works of art, craft and design whilst developing an appreciation and understanding of the work of others. Exposure to art and artists is another way in which we extend cultural capital.
Learning in Art makes our children artists.
Computing: Children understand and use ever-changing technology to develop, create and communicate in a safe, purposeful, digitally literate way.
Learning in Computing helps our children to be citizens of the digital world.
Design and Technology: Children research, design and make products that solve problems, evaluating how well their products work. They develop and refine a range of technical skills and processes, linking their learning to DT in the wider world.
Learning in DT makes our children designers, engineers, chefs, electricians, textile makers ...
English: Children think, speak, read and write fluently and confidently so they can communicate ideas, concepts and emotions to other people and so they can understand when other people communicate their ideas, thoughts and emotions with them. The texts we read provide access to a different strand of cultural capital.
Learning in English makes our children thinkers, orators, listeners, readers, authors, poets and fully participating members of a rich, diverse society.
Foreign Languages: Children speak, read and write in Latin, a language that is not widely spoken in our country despite it being the basis of much of English. It helps their understanding of SPaG. Latin helps them to understand and make links between many languages, across subjects and widens their vocabulary. It provides access to a different strand of cultural capital.
Learning a language makes our children linguists – learning Latin also makes them classicists.
Geography: Children know about different places, people, resources and natural and human environments in the world. They understand their place in the world and their impact upon it.
Learning in Geography makes our children geographers.
History: Children are interested in and knowledgeable about the past and how it impacts events that happen today and that may happen in the future.
Learning about History makes our children historians.
Mathematics (Maths): Children have a curiosity about numbers, patterns, connections and links which help them to understand the world, to reason, to problem solve and to be curious. They are able to manipulate numbers fluently and with confidence.
Learning in Maths makes our children mathematicians.
Music: Children create, compose, learn and perform musically so they are confident, creative performers through expert tuition. They become appreciative, engaged listeners through our whole school singing focus. They make more music, think more musically and consequently become more musical. Music is another strand of cultural capital.
Learning in Music makes us musicians and performers.
Personal Social Health Education: Children learn how to be happy, healthy, safe and prepared for life’s opportunities. It is a key part of their personal development and both a curriculum subject and a driver in all aspects of school life (PRIDE/Embark Award/Outdoor Learning/Active breaks and lunchtimes/Zoned and free flow breaks and lunchtimes) It is a different strand of cultural capital.
Learning in PSHE helps our children to be positive members of our community and citizens of the world.
Physical Education: Children develop communication skills essential to working within a team, physical skills and knowledge of movement so that they can use these to perform in a wide range of activities that help them develop an active and healthy lifestyle for life.
The sports we learn and being active make our children sports people.
RE*: Children explore big questions about life so that they understand what people believe and how this affects the ways in which they live. They will develop their own understanding of religions and worldviews – another strand of cultural capital.
Learning in RE helps our children to be citizens of the world.
Science: Children are curious about the world and how it works. They understand how the physical and natural world behaves through observing, experimenting, recording and knowing. They understand the role that Science plays in their lives and how it could shape their future..
Learning in Science makes our children scientists.
