Autumn Term 2024
Welcome back to the first term of Year 5. We hope you have enjoyed the summer break and are ready for all of the exciting things we have to learn this term.
This half term our main topic will be Earth and Space where we get to look closely at our solar system. We will be investigating each of the 8 planets, how they move, why we have night and day and the importance of gravity. Our writing this half term will be a non-chronological report full of interesting facts about the solar system.
In English, we will be focussing on sentence structures (co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions), fronted adverbials, cohesion across and within paragraphs and ensuring that spellings are embedded from previous year groups.
In Maths, we will be focussing on place value and addition and subtraction.
Exciting things to look forward to:
Black History Month
Remembrance
Wider Curriculum
PE
Our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please arrive to school in your PE kit. This does not need to be changed during the day. Please can we emphasise that PE kit should be plain black joggers/shorts/ hoodies without any logos.
We will also be continuing our work on Latin and continuing to look at word class and sentence order. We have been really impressed by the enthusiasm so far!
In RE, we will be looking at places of worship, religious art and charities supported by religion. We will be looking at how people from different faiths express their beliefs in these ways.
Home Learning
Homework
Homework will be marked on a Friday morning. Please make sure you have completed both the English and Maths exercises ready for marking.
Spellings
Spellings will be tested on a Friday and new spellings will be handed out. Please make sure that these are being practised at home to support progress.
