Applying for a school place
When you have made a decision on which school you would like your child to attend, you can find the online page for applying for a school place in Derbyshire here.
I hope that our website will give you a flavour of what our school is about and how we look to make the children's time with us enjoyable and positive. We make no apologies for having high expectations of everybody, ourselves included - indeed we are proud of these expectations and our children rise to the challenges we set them. We talk about PRIDE constantly - we have no written rules just an real understanding of how to show PRIDE in everything we do.
We run an Open Evening after the applications have opened and recommend that you come and have an explore of our school and talk to the staff to see what life at Riddings Junior is about. The Open Evening booklet for this year can be found below.
Although it can be difficult for parents of Year 2 children to consider this, once your child starts with us we are looking forward 4 years aiming to equip your child to take on the challenges of a secondary school. This time will go by very quickly and working with you we have to ensure that your child is ready, academically and socially, for this next step.
We work closely with all the schools that Year 2 children come from to ensure that we have a clear picture of their individual strengths and whether they require additional support. Year 3 teachers meet with Year 2 colleagues and, if possible meet the children in their infant schools.
The move to the Key Stage 2 curriculum (Year 3 - 6) as well as a move to a new school might bring additional demands on children and parents - we all need to work hard to settle the children into a new building and way of working.
Our Inclusion Team, led by Mrs Godfrey, the school's Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, provides superb support to all our children. She works alongside infant school SENCOs to understand the needs of those children for whom school has extra challenges. Alongside other staff including Mrs Patrick, Miss Smith and Mrs Fox, our Well Being Mentors, the team also provides support to families and children where difficulties are not solely about learning.
You can find lots more guidance and information under our Inclusion 'tab'.
Year 2 - 3 Transition
Currently our Year 3 group is taught by a team of 3 teachers - our 60 children therefore have the opportunity to work in groups of 20 on many occasions so that we can provide a really positive start to their time with us. Later in the year, then for the remainder of their time with us, children will be in classes of 30. This additional teacher staffing is provided through our use of Pupil Premium funding as for us the time when our children require most support is upon entry to Year 3.
Our current Year 3 teachers - Miss Bailey (Barber Class), Miss Beresford (Oakes Class) and Miss Hibbitt (Shrewsbury Class) who is teaching whilst Miss Jarrett is on maternity leave.
